Founder & Chief Impact Officer

SUTW Impact Consulting

In the day, Ruo Mei Chua dedicates her time to training Millennial professionals, driven by an abiding passion to provoke deeper self-inquiry, visioning and restore each person to their place of truest calling where they can best flourish. Because each audience is unique, she believes in a 'bespoke' tailored approach to training design: bringing the best of her international experience (6.5 years), diverse corporate background and research-backed models to the table each time.

A linguistic dork by nature, Ruo Mei adores learning different languages as a window into the cultures and hearts of diverse people groups around the world. She is effectively bilingual in English and Mandarin-- having served in live interpretation roles internationally-- and has attained intermediate-advanced standing in Spanish and Japanese.

A chatterbox since young, Ruo Mei is known to be a bubbly extrovert but can also go really tame with a steaming cup of peppermint tea and a nice thoughtful book in hand.

Ruo Mei always has a keen eye out for fresh ideas and welcomes you to come speak with her. Also, if you happen to love people (especially children), furkids, and the wild outdoors (she finally checked Machu Picchu's Inca Trail off her bucket list on her honeymoon), you are in great company here.

Connect with her to swap ideas, and for training/coaching consultations.

Professional Experience

Ruo Mei’s career has spanned the government, corporate, private and not-for-profit sectors.

She joined International Enterprise (IE) Singapore after graduating magna cum laude (first-class honours) from Brown University with a B.A. in International Relations. As Manager of six markets in the U.S., Canada and Latin America, Ruo Mei gained invaluable exposure to global working norms and drove trade at high levels between governments, ambassadors and local businesses, quickly learning how to be both personable yet professional in her communication.

Keen to accelerate her learning curve in the business world, Ruo Mei entered CapitaLand under the Graduate Development Programme (GDP). A prestigious programme with an acceptance rate of fewer than 8 management executives annually, applicants are assessed through rigorous rounds of interviews with senior management from the C-suite at every stage.

As Management Executive, she spent her first 6 months in Shanghai shadowing the Residence Manager of Ascott's flagship property, acquiring industry and cultural know-how through the tutelage of experienced mentors. Subsequent postings included CapitaMalls HQ, where she worked with diverse departments to enhance voucher processes; during this time, she independently produced three case studies that were presented to all of CapitaLand’s Chief Executives and also served as project lead of the team that launched CAPITASTAR's first award-winning website in 2012. At CapitaLand, Ruo Mei proved her ability to produce high-quality work under tight timelines, problem-solve with limited information and take full ownership of driving each project to her best.

Ruo Mei later joined the private sector and used her business development expertise to expand her employer's reach in the oil and gas, marine-offshore sectors regionally. She also held the dual role of Corporate Counsel, advising on international contracts and partnership structures.

Prior to setting up SUTW, Ruo Mei was Academy Manager and Lead Trainer at educational not-for-profit Halogen Foundation Singapore. It took a massive leap of faith to leave corporate for the-path-less travelled but once there, the decision felt right. It was at Halogen that Ruo Mei grew into her own as a trainer, having had the opportunity to learn from like-minded colleagues and sample a vast array of age groups and contexts. It was through this exploration that her vision for SUTW— a brainchild and dream of many years —was sharpened and distilled.

A mentor by disposition, Ruo Mei has a heart for coaching late teens and young working adults (into their late twenties and early thirties) to discover and achieve their fullest potential.

Supplementary: Facilitation Experience with IHL/ Tertiary Institutions and Corporations

Ruo Mei is known for her strength in facilitation and training, particularly with bright young adults from Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL). At Halogen, Ruo Mei was the chief project lead and programme anchor for both the Facilitation Training Workshops of St Andrew’s Junior College and Hwa Chong Institution—hosts of the 2015 and 2016 Pre-University Seminar respectively. In all, more than 250 student facilitators and educators from both institutions underwent full days of intensive training in preparation for their intensive roles. St Andrew’s Junior College subsequently referred the facilitators to Hwa Chong Institution, due to the high quality recognised by the former.

Ruo Mei was also selected to provide intensive 1:1 interview coaching for Victoria Junior College’s JC2 students in 2015, in preparation for selections interviews both local and overseas.

In 2015, Ruo Mei was also engaged as the sole external Chief Facilitator for the inaugural 3-Day Leadership Development Programme run by Nanyang Technological University’s University Scholars Program (USP). Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with the Program Manager, Ms. Sandra Walther, subsequently writing back to convey how “impressed (she) was with the knowledge, energy, and experience that I have witnessed in your colleagues”.

In her time at Halogen, Ruo Mei was also chief project lead in initiating and anchoring projects with major corporations, such as LinkedIn and Salesforce— consulting, design and conducting programmes to target tertiary students across diverse disciplines and countries.

Her incisive brain, empathetic touch and lively illustrations make her a unique fit for working with late teens and young adults in their crucial stages of development. For more recommendations, please visit this link.

International Interviewing Experience

As Chairperson of the United World College National Committee (Singapore) from 2010 to 2013, Ruo Mei planned, chaired and presided over the entire interview process end to end, interviewing numerous stellar candidates from 16 to 17 years of age from across Singapore. The candidates, of similar age to JC students, were jostling for four highly competitive scholarship offers to study at UWCs overseas.

Since graduating from Brown and returning to Singapore in 2009, Ruo Mei has been actively involved as a Brown alumni interviewer, both interviewing as well as writing interview recommendations/ reviews after each session. Over the years, even with Brown’s stringent admission rate of 6% globally, she has had nearly 1 admission every 1-2 years out of every 2-3 candidates interviewed, making it truly an above-average admission process despite the random allocation of interviewees.

Through her personal experience as a student going through multiple scholarship, admission and job interviews locally and worldwide (she was also a provisional Humanities scholar at Hwa Chong prior to entering UWC), as well as her multiple years of alumni interviewing and professional recruitment, Ruo Mei is widely known in her circles to be a consummate interviewer and trainer, with the uncanny ability to engage her audience with authenticity, yet hone in on inconsistencies and gaps where they matter.
