THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME

 

This is about the power of a smile.

 

Some years ago, a Korean senior of mine from Brown University wrote to me. It read, "Hi Ruo Mei, you probably don't remember this. But one day, I was really very down because of something that happened. Then I bumped into you on the street-- you waved at me, and smiled. That made my day."

 

Years on, I never forgot what he said to me. Frankly, I do not remember meeting, much less smiling to, him that day. Yet that smile meant everything to him that afternoon. A smile that stoked the embers of fire within, to help him remember that he was-- and still is-- valued and valuable, no matter what had happened to throw him off-centre.

 

And so when I finally lay me down to rest, I hope my epitaph will read as such-- "Here lies a girl whose smile lit up the world, a person at a time, a smile each time."
